Description
Three small wooden bees, wings caught mid-flutter, perch across a knotted piece of parasite wood – each one carved by hand, right down to the ridged stripes on their little bodies and the fine wire antennae bent just so. It’s a small, quietly charming scene: a tiny swarm frozen in wood, resting on a base that looks like it grew this way on purpose.
The base itself is genuine parasite wood, that dense, gnarled growth that forms on host trees and outlasts the tree it grew from. Its hollows, dark grain, and rough edges are entirely natural, not shaped by a tool, and no two bases start from the same form – which means the artisan carved and positioned each bee to suit this particular piece, not a mould. Because every base is a one-off to begin with, the finished sculpture can’t be exactly copied, even by the person who made it.
Look closely and you’ll notice small hand-carved details that vary bee to bee – a slightly different tilt of the wings, uneven ridges along the body, small differences in how each one catches the light. These aren’t mistakes to overlook; they’re the fingerprints of someone working with a knife and a small block of wood, not a machine stamping out identical parts.
