Description
Rising from a gnarled crown of natural parasite wood, this forest spirit emerges from a tumble of hand-carved leaves – a beard and mane worked entirely from foliage, with a calm, watchful face peering out from beneath them. Standing at roughly 70cm, this is the tallest piece in its batch, and its scale gives the carving real presence, whether mounted on a wall or set as a standalone sculpture.
The leafy body below the face is carved from solid wood, worked leaf by leaf with visible tool marks still present in the deeper folds, then finished with a soft green-gold wash that settles into the grain. The eyes are inset with small dark beads, giving the face a surprisingly alert, lifelike gaze up close. Because the piece is shaped entirely by hand, you’ll find gentle asymmetries in the leaf work and finish from one side to the other – the kind of quiet variation that only comes from a carver’s tools, not a mould.
Its rough, split crown was never carved to shape – the artisan simply found the face within the wood’s own contours and built the carving up from there, meaning this exact form could never be repeated even if someone tried.
